Alabama professor pleads guilty to shooting colleagues Sep 11th 2012, 19:41 BIRMINGHAM, Alabama | Tue Sep 11, 2012 3:41pm EDT BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Reuters) - A former Alabama biology professor avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty on Tuesday to murder and attempted murder charges over a 2010 shooting rampage on the University of Alabama at Huntsville campus, court officials said. Amy Bishop, 47, was accused of fatally shooting three colleagues and wounding three others during a biology department staff meeting in February 2010. Colleagues believed the Harvard-trained biologist was angry that the school had denied her tenure. Bishop will face up to life in prison in exchange for her guilty plea on one count of capital murder and three counts of attempted murder, according to the district attorney's office. A hearing is scheduled for September 24, the day her murder trial was to begin. Last year, Bishop pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
