WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday imposed financial penalties on Latin American street gang MS-13, which has thousands of members operating in the United States as well as El Salvador, Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
MS-13, which operates in at least 42 states and the District of Columbia, was added to the Obama administration's list of significant transnational criminal organizations.
The administration's label will subject MS-13 to a host of economic penalties, including blocking any property or property interests the gang has in the United States.
The gang is engaged in crimes including drug trafficking, murder, rape, prostitution, kidnapping and assault, the FBI says.
