(Reuters) - Rescue crews dug all night and into Monday morning, trying to reach two children who were buried underground when a dirt wall collapsed on them at a North Carolina construction site.

The children, a 6-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, were presumed to have died, the Charlotte Observer quoted an emergency management official as saying.

A man believed to be the father of at least one of the children called emergency services on Sunday afternoon and said the dirt collapsed on the children as they were playing in an excavated hole about 20 to 25 feet deep, the newspaper said.

Dozens of rescue personnel worked all night at the accident site about 20 miles northwest of Charlotte in Lincoln County but had not found the children by daybreak.
