ATLANTA (Reuters) - A massive search operation was under way on Wednesday for a teenager missing for more than 24 hours after she was abducted in her pajamas by armed men who snatched her from a suburban Atlanta home, police said.

The two men initially demanded money and jewelry after breaking into the Ellenwood home of 14-year-old Ayvani Hope Perez, according to the Clayton County Police Department.

But when the girl's mother said she had nothing to give them, they kidnapped her daughter instead, pulling her out of a closet where she had been hiding with an older sibling, the police said.

The men also shot dead the family's dog, a small poodle.

Police spokeswoman Charlene Watson-Fraser denied reports that Perez's parents had received a demand for a $10,000 ransom to win the girl's release.

Family members could not be reached for immediate comment. But Perez's aunt, Suky Guerrero, was quoted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper as saying she and others were trying to get the money together to secure the girl's release.

The family issued a statement by an unidentified relative broadcast on NBC saying, "Please bring her safe and sound, that's all I ask you. I don't care who you are. I just want her safe at home, please."

Friends and classmates held a candlelight vigil for Perez on Tuesday night, praying for her safe return.

Perez, who is 4-feet, 9-inches tall, weighs 93 pounds and has brown eyes and black hair, was wearing blue and gray Star Wars pajama bottoms and a superhero shirt as she was bundled out of her home, police said.

Watson-Fraser confirmed that authorities were conducting a massive manhunt for Perez and her suspected kidnappers, but she declined to give details, saying she was unauthorized to speak about the operation publicly.

The FBI and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are assisting in the search for the girl, police said. Police released artist sketches of the men suspected of taking Perez and appealed to the public for help in locating the teenager.

A police alert on Tuesday said Perez was "believed to be in extreme danger" after the robbers sped off with her in a gray Dodge vehicle.
