Violent protest hits Anaheim

ANAHEIM, California | Wed Jul 25, 2012 1:27am EDT

ANAHEIM, California (Reuters) - Protesters flung chairs through the windows of a Starbucks in Anaheim on Tuesday, in the second major clash between police and demonstrators in the southern California city since an officer shot to death an apparently unarmed man.

The violence arose one day after Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait called for a state and federal review of the shooting of the man, a suspected gang member.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside City Hall on Tuesday, where officials were holding a regular meeting.

They were told by police to leave the area, and as the crowd was moving away from City Hall some people threw patio chairs through the windows of a Starbucks, according to a Reuters witness. Patrons and workers huddled at the back of the coffee shop.

Protesters also threw water bottles and rocks toward the line of police officers, who were wearing helmets and face shields and wielding night sticks.

At least one demonstrator was arrested.

On Saturday afternoon, two officers tried to approach three men in an alley, and the men fled, Anaheim police spokesman Sergeant Bob Dunn said this week. The officers followed on foot and one caught up to one suspect, police said.

The officer fatally shot the man, later identified as Manuel Diaz, a known gang member, police said. In a later inspection, Diaz was not found to have been carrying a gun, police said.

Near the scene of the shooting on Saturday, police fired pepper pellets at angry residents demonstrating against the shooting of Diaz. A German shepherd also got loose - police said it was an accident - and bit at least two people.

In a separate incident, Anaheim officers late on Sunday tried to stop a car and killed a man who police said fled the vehicle and opened fire on them during a foot chase.

He was the fifth person to die in an officer-involved shooting in Anaheim this year.
