LOS ANGELES | Tue Sep 24, 2013 8:56pm EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A panel of judges on Tuesday granted California four extra weeks to reduce overcrowding in its prisons after the state legislature approved a compromise plan this month that would dedicate funds to shrink inmate numbers through rehabilitation.

The three-member panel extended the deadline from December 31 to January 27, 2014, to reduce the prison population to 137.5 percent of design capacity either through releasing inmates or placing them elsewhere.

The panel ordered all parties involved in the case to meet in October with another judge who would report back on their progress.
